It's hard to believe I'm sitting here writing notes for the second B3 Kings Christmas CD and preparing another tour. Hard to believe, because this band was started as a lark. It was supposed to be a one off performance. Instead it has become a Cellar tradition that the jazz masses look forward to every year.
The idea came about when I sat in with Denzal and Chris at their set for one of our Cellar benefits in the early years. The cool part about that particular set was that Denzal played drums in addition to singing. I had no idea that he played drums. He sounded fantastic. Really pure, organic swing that felt good and of course Gestrin behind the 400 pound Hammond B3 always sounds good. I think it was Gestrin’s idea to do a Christmas themed night and the B3 Kings were born. After a few years of selling out the club on consecutive nights the trio agreed that an organ band wasn't complete without the guitar. Enter Bill Coon! Not only is Bill a wonderful guitarist but also a great arranger. Bill has a long musical history with Denzal and of course Gestrin and I had played with Bill a lot. Over the next few years we would piece together the repertoire that would make up half of 'A Cellar Live Christmas.,‘ our first CD in tandem with The Bruno Hubert Trio. We continued to do the gigs at The Cellar every year as well as a few BC and Alberta tours. Our repertoire and arrangements continued to grow to the point where we thought it was time to do a full CD of the B3 Kings for Christmas. You Better Watch Out! is a collection of tunes and arrangements that we have been performing for the better part of 8 years as well as some arrangements that we came up with in the studio on the the day of the recording. The spontaneity and unpredictability of this band is what makes it so fantastic and is a big reason why every December 22nd and 23rd are 2 of the most anticipated dates of the year.
With the exception of this year when we played 2 nights together in the summer to prepare for this recording, the only time the B3 Kings get together is at Christmas time and the band looks so forward to getting together and making music together. It really has become a band and personally it’s one of my favorite gigs I do at the club!
